Dennegeur Farms is nestled in the Elgin Valley, approximately 70 km southeast of Cape Town, in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. With a legacy that dates back to 1948, Dennegeur has grown from a modest family farm into an industry leader in apple and pear production, balancing tradition with innovation to ensure long-term sustainability and excellence.

The story of Dennegeur Farms began when Sas Beukes acquired the land from his father in 1948. In the same year, he planted the first ± 500 apple trees and cultivated vegetables between the orchards to generate essential income. Over the years, the farm expanded, and in 1960, a dam was constructed to support further growth, ultimately allowing Dennegeur to flourish with 24 hectares of planted trees. From the outset, Dennegeur managed its own packing operations, ensuring quality control at every stage of production.

In 1970, Sas Beukes’ son, Josias Beukes, joined the family business and played a pivotal role in its continued success. When Sas retired in 1976, Josias took over operations and officially purchased the farm in 1981. Under his leadership, Dennegeur Farms experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 24 hectares to an impressive 200 hectares of cultivated land. The strong foundation established by Sas and Josias paved the way for future generations to build upon their success.

In 2019, the new generation took over their father’s legacy. Stephan Beukes now serves as CEO of Dennegeur Farms, while Carina van Wyk leads the Dennegeur Foundation as its CEO. Their leadership continues to drive the farm’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.

Today, Dennegeur is a family-run operation that oversees the entire production, packing, and sales process with a hands-on approach. The farm’s commitment to scientific precision and strong operational processes has made it a benchmark for excellence in the industry.

What began as ± 500 apple trees in 1948 has expanded into a combined unit of 800 hectares, with 457 hectares dedicated to commercial apple and pear orchards. Dennegeur’s unwavering commitment to quality and accreditation has solidified its reputation as a leader in the industry.

Post-harvest management at Dennegeur is meticulously detailed. Every orchard is assessed throughout the growing season, ensuring that fruit is sequenced into the correct storage regime and sales window. The farm’s Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage capacity allows optimal conditions for extended storage, ensuring peak quality throughout the supply window. By doing optimum maturity analysis for harvest windows, Dennegeur consistently achieves exceptional fruit performance year after year.

The farm’s Environmental Management Plan is built around the three pillars of Sustainable Development: promoting social and economic well-being while protecting the environment.
